ALONE ON ISLAND
MAN AND WIFE * MAROONED FISHING LAUNCH STRANDED If From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Friday. When their fishing launch Hillary was stranded on the Hen Island on Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Donovan were in dire straits until they were rescued by the scow Moa this afternoon. The Moa, in charge of Captain Norton, was passing the island this afternoon, when the launch’s plight was noticed and all haste was made to effect a rescue. When taken off to the scow, Mrs. Donovan was found to be in a state of exhaustion, and her husband was also suffering from the effects of want of food. The scow took them to their home at Taurikura Bay, in Whangarei Harbour. Mr. Donovan is a fisherman. It is understood Mrs. Donovan is making a good recovery and medical aid was not necessary. The extent of the damage to the launch is not known, hut it is anticipated that if the weather remains calm it can be refloated.
There is always a danger of launches and boats being driven ashore in the vicinity of the mishap and it is considered a food depot should be placed on the island.
