£5,000,000 FOR FIFTY NEW FILMS
M-G-M’S POLICY EXPLAINED FOR AUSTRALIA AND N.Z. M etro-Goldivyn-Mayer’s Australian organisation will this year handle six British-made feature films, in addition to the whole output of Commonwealth Government and New Zealand Government productions. Announcing these facts at the opening of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer convention at the Hotel Australia in Sydney, Mr. N. B. Freeman, managing director of the Australian company, said that this, following upon the distribution of “Mons” last year, showed that M.-G.-M. were out to give the public the best pictures irrespective of the country of origin. In addition, a film version of the Life of Napoleon, produced under supervision of the French Government, will be released. That the motion picture production business is an expensive affair was shown by Mr. Freeman’s statement that M.-G.-M. would next year produce 50 feature films at a total coat of £5,000,000, averaging £IOO,OOO each production. Touching upon speaking pictures, or “sound films,” Mr. Freeman explained that Lionel Barrymore would probably be the first Metro artist to appear in a sound picture. Upward of 50 delegates attended the convention.
