KING’S CUP AIR RACE FIRST STAGE COMPLETED British Official Wireless. Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Friday. Competitors in the 1,000 miles handicap air race round Britain for # King’s Cup completed the first stage to-day at the Renfrew airdrome, a distance of 540 miles. Miss Spooner, the only woman competitor, who flies a Moth machine, made a great bid for victory. Starting third from Hendon, she was second to arrive at Norwich, and was the first at Birmingham. She was still leading at Leeds, but afterwards lost her advantage. The first to arrive at Renfrew was Flying-Officer Atcherley, in a GlosterGrebe, his time being shr 19min 27sec. Miss Spooner was tenth, in shr 47 min 54sec. FIRST DAY’S PLACINGS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) Reed. noon. LONDON, Friday. In the King’s Cup air race round Britain to-day, the leading machines at the end of the first day at Renfrew were: First.—Flight Officer Atcherley, Gloster-Grebe, 40 minutes 56 seconds start, arrived at 5.19.27 p.m. Captain Broad. De Haviland Moth, 94min 35sec start, arrived at 5.20.53 p.m, W. Hope, the holder, De Haviland Moth, llomin 40sec start, at 5.27.19 p.m. C. Unwin, Bristol machine, 34min 41sec start, at 5.34.12 p.m.
