The Citta Di Milano will bring them home, and afterv ards return to King’s Bay to participate in further searches.
A message from Spitzbergen says Commandant Mariano, one of the survivors of the Italia disaster, was compelled to have one of his legs amputated.
A doctor from the airship’s supply ship the Citta di Milano went on board the Russian ice-breaker Krassin to perform the operation.
The Paris correspondent of “The Times” says French aviators consider that Captain Roald Amundsen and Major Gilbaud are possibly still alive.
CLAIM FOR £50,000
PAPUAN GOLDFIELD LEASE WRONGFUL ARREST (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Thursday. A claim for £ 50,000 for alleged wrongful arrest has been made on behalf of Jeremiah Jackson against seven named members of the South Pacific Prospecting and Developing Company. The case will be heard in September. The action arises out of a charge of conspiracy preferred against Jackson in connection with certain goldmining leases in Papua, which was dismissed.
The Russian authorities intend to continue the search for them.
Times Cable. SWEDISH PARTY RECALLED
“The Times” Stockholm correspondent states that a message has been received that the whole of the Swedish expedition has now been recalled. This signifies that there is small hope of rescue for the remaining exiles.
The Norwegian Government does not stances of the Italia expedition, but has received assurances from the Italian Government that it is being fully investigated, particularly causes of the lives lost.
The Norwegian expedition remains to look for Captain Amundsen’s party. It is stated that General Nobile intends returning to Rome at the first opporCommandant Mariano’s frost-bitten leg has been amputated satisfactorily.
It was with the idea of waking in the hearts of Italians a deeper national pride that the Fascists dispatched the Italia’s exploring party to the dangers of the Pole, the airmen Ferrarin and Delprete on the hazardous non-stop flight to Brazil, and an exploring expedition to Central Asia.
Mussolini is a hater of failure. Thus he has forbidden interviews about an expedition that failed so tragically. It was thought significant that when he congratulated the flyers to Brazil he made no mention of Nobile or the Italia tragedy.
