DIGNITY DASHED The insecurity of modern life, even in the seats of the mighty, was clearly exemplified at Pukekohe recently when a representative of the magistracy was sadly let down. One of the presiding justices at the local Police Court was sitting on a chair that, after giving several ominous creaks, collapsed suddenly, leaving its occupant still in a sitting position—but on the floor, with his head only showing above the bench. Perhaps it was thte fear of so undignified a catastrophe that induced ou* forefathers to provide the Lord Chancellor with a woolsack.

COOK’S BIRTHPLACE Few people are aware that Captain James Cook’s birthplace was Middlesbrough. The citizens of this “Ironopolis” of North England have decided to perpetuate the memory of the gallant sailor, as the following news item in a Sunderland paper- will show-: —-‘‘Stewart Park was opened yesterday (May 23). The park, which is a mile from the Midlesbrough town ooundary, consists of 110 acres of beautifully wooded and ornamented ground surrounding Marton Hall, once the home of the Bolckows, founders of the famous Middlesbrough iron and steel firm of Bolckow, Vaughan and Company, The site of the cottage where Captain Cook, the world circumnavigator, was born, is situated iu Stewart Park. The cottage itself was demolished iu 1876.”
