DOOR OF HOPE
WORK OF THE YEAR The home was taxed to its utmost capacity, there being 23 girls there at present, stated the annual report of the committee of the Door of Hope Association, read at the annual meeting at Salem House yesterday afternoon. The home had been brought under the provisions of the Child Welfare Act during the year, and the committee was satisfied that it would be able at all times to face the strictest Government inspection. It hoped that during the ensuing year the bank overdraft would be wiped out. Mrs. J. Graham, the superintendent, in her report, stated that under the name “Salem” a certain term of reproach had been lifted, giving the workers greater freedom and wider scope in their efforts. The provision of a tennis court in the grounds had been made last year, and was much appreciated, as outdoor exercise of some kind was a necessary factor in the work.
Activities had also been extended by the opening of a small hostel, where the senior girls could have the protection of home life and the advantages of Christian influence.
Mrs. Graham thanked Miss Spicer, child welfare officer, and many other friends, who had taken an interest in the work, and who had done all in their power to help.
The committee, which is the same as last year with the exception of Mr. H. Ennor, who was elected this year, is as follows: Mr. W. R. Wilson (chairman), Mr. Grey Campbell. Mr. H. D. Guthrie, Mr. J. B. Macky. Mr. J. C. Dickinson. Mr. M. Ennor. Mrs. G. Howard. Mrs. R. Jenkins, and Miss Baker.
The Rev. Frazer Barton gave an address, and also congratulated the superintendent and staff on their work ■Afternoon tea was served by Mrs, Graham and her sister.
