BEEKEEPER’S LETTER HAS DECIDED STING

COMMERCE CHAMBER’S INTEREST IN HONEY EXPORT RESENTED

Tile Bee-keepers’ Association and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce are at loggerheads. The association has informed the chamber that its interest in 1 -ney export is unwelcome and l: ~v'*ted.

The letter which convey the intimation was the outcome oi . inquiry held two years ago, which r s I d in the chamber asking the Government to hold an investigation into the operation of export control boards. This request was recently repeated, the Honey Board being one concerned. “We wish to intimate to your chamber that your unwelcome and uninvited interference in the domestic affairs of those engaged in the honey industry is widely resented,” said the 101101-. “and has created the imi that the body of sane opinion in your chamber is in the habit of being stampeded by the vested interest . whose desire is to secure disunity and weakness among the producers. for reasons well known to all business men. “CAN SPEAK OURSELVES” “We wish to assure your chamber that we are well able to speak for ourselves, and will, if we desire your chamber’s support in any question, solicit its help by approved methods of procedure. “Until that time we consider that your chamber would be well advised to get expert and weighty data before initiating a raw and ill-advised agitation on matters that concern us alone.” The chairman. Mr. H. T. Merritt, considered that the letter was quite uncalled for. The chamber bad known what it was doing, and had. in anv case, merely asked for an inquiry. The exports of honey for the past three years showed: Year - Pounds. Value P>26 .... 1 211,000 £33,432 3-026 .. .. 1,211,000 C 33,432 3027 . . . . 530,000 C 23.170 “This is not quite such a happy position as they would lead us to “ commented Mr. Merritt. Mr. .T. a. C. Allum: It would pav people like these to make tlv mselv - conversant with the obje< ts ponsible body before writing a letter ' the best intentions. It was decided that the- letter would not be received.
