IN THE MARKET PLACE
THE KIT BAG
EGGS DOWN FURTHER 2D BETTER DEMAND FOR APPLES The downward trend of the egg market continues. Prices in the City Marts dropped another 2d over the week. Apples are meeting with a slightly better sale, values showing a slight improvement. Cooking apples meet with a specially firm demand for good quality fruit. Local lemons sell freely and realise high prices. Pears are slow of sale, with the market The Sydney boat brought a shipment of citrus fruit on Tuesday that met with a ready sale, and practically all went into consumption within a day or so of arrival. Mandarins made 10s to 14s a case; passions, 20s to 32s 6d: pines, lSs io 25s 6cl; Seville oranges, Ss 6d to 10s; navel oranges, 9s to 11s. Big Orange Shipment The Waipalii brought a large consignWednesday. The condition of the shipment was good. Tomatoes by the same boat from the Cook Group made up to 6s 6d a case. Bananas are now in short supply and the market has a rising tendency. In the field and garden produce sections little movement worthy of note has taken place in prices. Cabbages are in shorter supply and prices as a result register a rising tendency. Keen Demand for Vegetables Most vegetables meet with a keen de- i rnand. There is a decline in the market for eggs, but prices must now be little short of bedrock, and the lower levels of the last week or so should stimulate the demand. Ample supplies are coming forward. A brighter tone is recorded in the poultry section. Most classes of quality birds meet with a keen demand on a firmer market. Cockerels are over-supplied and values in this class are lower. Turkeys are coming forward freely for this time of the year and meeting with a fair demand. THE QUEST FOR OIL
ACTIVITY ON ROMA FIELD Of 230 applications made to the Queensland Alines Department for oil permits in the Roma district, 120 have been granted to date. It is estimated that more than 100,000 persons are financially interested in these ventures. The area of the holding in each case is about 10,000 acres, and the tenure of the permit 12 months. To those who begin active operations within that period, renewals will be granted. Some cannot yet get plant and skilled drillers. Others—these the majority—are awaiting the results of the work which is being done by Roma Oil Corporation, Lander Oilfield (Australia), Ltd., and Builders, Ltd. A Brisbane press comment on the position is that the only profit so far yielded by oil mining in Queensland is that taken by the Government, which receives about £SO in fees, stamp duties, and other charges from each applicant for a permit. Transfers of permits, of which there have been many, provide an additional source of State revenue.
