Soccer Cup-Ties

Second Round of Knockouts

Trams and Belmont Replay

THE second round of the Falcon Cup ties is set down for decision to-morrow when principal interest will be centred in the replay of the Tramways-Belmont bout. After a hard and lively game at Devonport last week uo decision was reached, and to-morrow’s knock-out should prove another close struggle for the survival of the fittest—or, perhaps, luckiest. The curtain-raiser will also be a knock-out in the same competition between Northcote and Corinthians, giving the spectators an opportunity of comparing one of the weaker senior teams with one of the liveliest junior ones. Metropolitan has to face Ponsonby on the Domain, and Shore meets Manurewa at Devonport.

Judging by last Saturday’s exciting tie between Tramways and Belmont, when the holders of the cup only escaped defeat by a desperate rally in the dying stages of the game, the renewal of the encounter at Blandford Park to-morrow should furnish another exciting tussle to settle who goes on in the competition. Tramways are keen on retaining the trophy, and has a fine team of seasoned players, who know all the finer points of the game, and can produce a good display of clever Soccer. But in cup tie bouts the honours are not always to the most skilful or finished side, and Belmont has a team of lively youngsters, who are satisfied they can stop the Trams without an Order-in-Council. The youngest of the senior teams has improved with every game lately, and has cultivated a defence which takes a lot of penetrating. The forwards are
