ONLY TWO HAVE REPRESENTED N.Z. AT CRICKET AND FOOTBALL
f’PHE fact that two members of the New Zealand cricket team which toured England last year, C. Oliver and M. L. Page, are representing Canterbury at Rugby this year, recalls the fact that very few have achieved greatness at the leading summer and winter sports. George Dickinson is the only New Zealander who has represented his country at both cricket and Rugby, 1 although Ces. Dacre of Auckland, was both a cricket and Soccer “All Black.”
The classic for all time is the late A. E. Stoddart, an Englishman, who capt a i n e d his
country at both cricket and Rugby football, the latter event was brought about by the death of R. L. Seddon, who was captain of the British Rugby team which visited Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Seddon was drowned in Australia while sculling on the Nepean River, and Stoddart captained the team on the remainder of the tour. By a coincidence, Stoddart himself met a tragic death many years later.
