RANGITOTO ROAD

HIGHEST POINT REACHED

WORK ADVANCING WELL *j . The Summit Road now being built j on Rangitoto Island, has reached its highest elevation and probably the road will be in use by Christmas. j This information was conveyed in a I ! report to the Devonport Domain Board ! by its engineer, Mr. A. T. Griffiths, last ! evening. The road has been blinded and is in very good condition as far as the beacon at the north end of the j island; beyond that the road rises j ; steadily until it reaches the saddle j visible at the left of#the crater, looking from the city. The motor road j will not be carried the extra few chains ! up to the trig station as the walls of ! the crater are composed of scoria and ; are too thin to admit of cutting a roadway. In the saddle there is a ! flat place suitable for parking from j ! 30 to 60 cars. From its highest elevation the road ! will be carried down the ridge running j towards the St. Helier’s Bay side of ! the mountain and meet the roadway • from the wharf to Islington Bay j which it is hoped to put in hand j shortly. A more extensive route , along the coast to the eastward has [ been abandoned. Suitable material for blinding exists j near the summit an dis being transported by the prison labour engaged on the work.
