STEAMERS DELAYED
GALES IN THE SOUTH Press Association. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. A strong north-east gade has been blowing in the South for the past two days, but the sky is almost cloudless. No damage has been reported in the city, although the squalls were violent last night and to-day. Many vessels have received a buffeting along the East Coast of the South Island. The Pipiriki, from Lyttelton, arrived off the Heads this morning, but was unable to enter port owing to the high wind. A pilot is on board and the vessel is now riding at anchor a short distance from the Heads.
The steamers Calm and Kaponga. from Bluff, encountered the full force of the gale on their way to Dunedin, and reached port after a severe buffeting over 12 hours late. The gale abated late to-day. but the wind is still fresh from the northeast. The Pipiriki will enter port to-morrow morning. The steamer Northumberland was unable to leave Port Chalmers this afternoon for the Bluff, owing to the gale.
ISLAND SHIP IN STORM
C H RISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The new Government motor-ship Maui Pomare arrived this morning at Lyttelton from Apia and Niue Island with her first cargo of fruit for the South Island, and a number of passengers. The Maui Pomare had a tempestuous trip shortly after leaving Niue Island, and was hove-to at times. The gale was most severe on Saturday, Sunday and Monday but the ship came through well. She brought a large cargo of bananas and a few tons of general Island cargo.
