Chairman of Harbour Board Has a Good Time
Visits New York and Drinks His Own Health GIVEN "WO OF THE BEST" (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Wednesday. ‘T thought in Chicago that prohibition was well carried out, but in New York the place is full of booze,” writes Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, in a long letter to a Hamilton resident. “Two bottles of whisky were sent along the first day to us, and last night we were presented with two more of the best. During the banquet we had whisky all the time, and liqueurs to finish up with. A bottle of another popular brand was produced
one day in an office for us, so we drank the health of the members of the Auckland Harbour Board. Anyway, here prohibition is an utter farce. Tonight we are to be the guests of Captain , and champagne is to be the tipple, and afterwards a play called •Bachelor Father.” Champagne costs 18 dollars and 35 dollars in the
cabarets.” Later on Mr. Mackenzie says that the hospitality of the Auckland Harbour Board was much appreciated in U.S.A. The Americans were returning it with both hands. His book, presented to him in Auckland by the heads of the staff, was admired greatly and he was very proud of it. The feeling toward the British nation there was warm, and more so to the Dominions than to the Motherland. They were anxious to trade with New Zealand and their leading business men were firmly of the opinion that New Zealand should have a trade commissioner there. "My first impression of the Americans still holds good,” lie concludes. •'They are fine people—that is, at any rate, the big ones—and go to no end •of trouble to give you a good time.”
