T>Y equipping carriages on mail and express trains with emergency brakes the Railway Department is preparing a New Zealand setting for the series of hoary jokes about communication cords, and some day soon an agitated mother may be able to stop the onrushing Limited because little Johnny has dropped his hat into the night. Mr. T. K. Sidey showed anxiety a few days ago as to whether the Government was fulfilling its promise to instal the emergency fittings. Stating that 122 cars in the Nortn Island, and 113 in the South, have been dealt with, Mr. Coates reassured him.
