WORK FOR EX-SOLDIERS The Birkenhead Borough Council pressed the opinion that steps should be met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. The Auckland Play and Recreation Society was granted permission to take up a street collection on Friday, August 10. “If you don’t send us any money, will you send us your advice,” was the parting "words of Mr. Vaile, one of a deputation who explained the Auckland War Memorial’s financial position. It was decided to reconsider the question of a contribution at the next meeting. A donation of £lO 10s, the same as last year, was made to the funds of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association. It was decided that the Poppy Day fund be spent on making 30 seats the work to be done by ex-soldiers. Cr. H. Clark was appointed to attend the conference of local bodies at Mt. Eden next Tuesday in connection with the Auckland Water Supply Bill and town planning. A letter of appreciation is to be sent to Mr. Hislop, the district’s member on the Auckland Harbour Board thanking him for the keen interest he has taken in connection with the improvements at the -waterfront and .the road reserve fronting the jetties. Two nominations were received for the position of assessor—Mr. T. Hadfield and Mr. J. P. McPhail. Mr. Hadfield, however, wrote withdrawing, to save the expense of an election, and Mr. McPhail was appointed.
