Falstaff to Make Bow in British Opera
New Work Composed by Vaughan Williams
EARLY PERFORMANCE British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Wednesday. Dr. Ralph. Vaughan Williams, the prominent British composer, has written a full-length opera having Shakespeare’s Falstaff as the central character. The first performance will shortly be given at the Royal College of Music. Dr. Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the best known of the modern British composers. He was born in 1572, and was at Charterhouse and Cambridge. He studied at the Royal College of Music and at Beilin and Paris. His works include “Williow-wood” and the “London Symphony” and “Sea Symphony,” which placed him in the front rank. The “London Symphony” was produced in 1914, and revised. His finest symphony, the “Pastoral,” was produced in 1922. His music-drama. “Hugh the Drover,” is based on old English folk songs, which he has deeply studied. Tie has written several songs and settings for poems, and a Mass. His “Flos Campi” was produced in 1925.
