TURF NOTES
Waimate Hunt Club The annual race meeting of this club eventuates to-morrow, and will be followed on Saturday by the South Canterbury Hunt fixture. Useful Sprinters Engaged in the Morven Handicap tomorrow are Antrim Boy and Bronstell, both of whom should be well suited by the distance, seven furlongs. In Three Races Captain Sarto is engaged in each of the three steeplechases to be decided at the Waimate fixture to-morrow. On Trentham form Mainspring must be regarded favourably in the Waimate Steeplechase. Recruits To Hurdling It is unlikely that Aberfeldy will be on hand for the Studholme Hurdles tomorrow. Outside of him Heather Lad has the best credentials. Two recruits to the game are Tintoretto and Nine of Spades; the latter has been schooling at Riccarton in dashing style, and in such a weak field is capable of a surprise. Hack Sprint
The biggest field on the flat at Waimate to-morrow will probably be seen in the Waihao Hack, six furlongs. They are a poor lot, however, with Despot and Waihemo a pair that have registered one or two promising performances. To Ride In Sydney
J. Barry, who is to do the future riding for tlio Jamieson stable, left for Sydney yesterday to pilot this string in their engagements on the other side. Not for Gisborne
Llewellyn is not going to Gisborne. G. Holland will ride trainer Donaldson’s horses at that fixture on Thursday and Saturday of next week. Acceptances for the first day close on Friday night.
To Race Over Hurdles Abbott’s Delight, who is to do his future racing over the battens, jumped four schooling hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning.
Saw the Nationals The Auckland handicapper, Mr. F. J. McManemin, who attended the V.R.C., Grand National meeting a few days ago, has now returned to Sydney, where he will remain until the end of next month. Mr. McManemin is accompanied by his two daughters Staying At Home
The Wairarapa owner, Mr. W. R. Kemball, contemplated racing Hynanna and his sister Miss Ransom at the spring meetings in Australia, but it is practically certain now that the trip will be cancelled. Miss Ransom has not done well during the winter, and this may be the deciding factor, as Mr. Kemball does not care to send Hynanna away by himself. Hynanna wound up the present season a good performer, and he may be even better next season. He is reported to be going on well in his preparation for the spring racing.
Chit Lands £6,000 Cup Some months ago Geo. Delaney, a New Zealander, went back to the Dominion and picked up the filly Chit, a two-year-old by Paper Money. When he got her to Melbourne he wished he had left her in the Dominion. She acted like a mad thing on the track or on a racecourse. The stable -went for a good win on her at Williamstown recently, but lost their cash. Nothing daunted, however, they decided to go for a big win over her in the Myross Handicap the other day. They won just over £6,000. Only a handful, Ramona (as Chit is now called in Victoria), is evidently very game, as she got away indifferently. Straight Hitting
A controversy, racing clubs versus hunt clubs, is at present raging in a Wellington paper. Here is a portion of one letter: “I never questioned the fact that hunt clubs did good in bringing out horses, and no doubt the Waikato Hunt Club has done a wonderful amount of good on their farm, which pays well, but the point is—how did they obtain this farm and the money they lent the Waikato Racing Club? They did not put their hands in their pockets and get one penny piece. They took it out of the general public through the totalisator, gate money, entries, etc., and through the generosity of .the Waikato Racing Club in allowing them the use of their course for a mere bagatelle. .If this man was a true sport, he and his associates would put their hands in their pockets and pay for their own sport, instead of getting the public to do it through the totalisator.
Foxhill Changes Hands Mr. J. B. Joel, the millionaire racehorse owner, has purchased' the famous Wiltshire training establishment, Foxhill, between Hungerford and Swindon, which was developed by the late Mr. James White. Mr. Joel’s horses, which formerly were trained first by C. Morton, and then by C. Peck, at Letcombe Regis, Wantage, moved to Foxhill in July, 1926, and Mr. Joel’s team has been at Foxhill since then in the charge of C. Peck. When Mr. James White v s in his hey-day as a racehorse owner, he had many good winners from Foxhill, where H. L. Cottrill and subsequently G. L. Ward trained for him.
Jumping Prospects So far as the Grand National Steeplechase is concerned, Glendowie looks certain now to dominate the anto-post position more decidedly than ever (writes “Vedette”). It is unfortunate that Comical and Maunga did not go further at Trentham on Wednesday, but they may yet make some measure of amends at Riccarton. In regard to Maunga. it may be as well to state that he slipped right into tjie first fence in the Wellington Steeplechase. He had no chance whatever to jump cleanly, and it was surprising that he did not crash completely. Pouri, of course, now will have to be considered at Riccarton. but the fences might trouble him. and then there is always Beau Cavalier. Tuki. Brigadier Bill. Matu. Passin’ Through, and Rangi Sarto should all deserve a place in the field, and there is the promising Northerner, Wiltshire, and one or two Southerners in Greenstone and Dubious.
