MAJESTIC
“SADIE THOMPSON”
to-day and to-morrow remain xor Auckland picturegoers to visit the xviajestic to view “toadie Thompson, irom Somerset Maugham’s startling play, “-Rain,” which is enjoying a very triumphant screening at the Majestic Theatre. The rule of Sadie Thompson is portrayed by Miss Gloria Swanson, who incurred ~ the wrath of the reformer Atkinson because of her easy familiarity with the marines at Pago Pago. A big moment occurs when Sadie discovers that Atkinson has interviewed Lhe governor, and induced that official to order her departure from the island on the first San Francisco boat. Sadie’s bitter arraignment of the reformer is a scene of such dramatic intensity that it beggars description. Tho xrarris Sisters, Mildred and Connie, are appearing on the stage. Never nefore have so many instruments been piayed by two girls as during this stage novelty. Mirth, music, and melody are contained in the programme, for both girls are born musicians, and Connie is a natural comedienne. A Majestic magazine, a beautiful Irish scenic, “By Kullarney’s Lakes, and Fells”; a merry comedy, -“Leave ’Em Laughing”; and an Eve's Review, are included on the pictorial programme. A very beautiful musical programme is presented by Mr. Whiteford-Waugh’s Majestic Orchestra, the musical numbers including favourite gems from the pens of famous composers, and the ighter modern music. A great laughter programme will be screened at the Majestic Theatre on Friday, when “Bringing Up Father” will be presented for the first time in New Zealand. Jiggs, Dinty Moore, Maggie, the count, Ellen —the whole lovable, laughable crowd have been brought to the screen in a hilarious comedy-drama. One of the most novel attractions ever seen in Auckland will be the appearance on the Majestic stage of “Jerry,” the fighting kangaroo. “Jerry’s” appearance in the roped arena has attracted considerable interest both in America and in Australia, and his antics have caused many a hearty laugh. In the ring, “Jerry” combines boxing, wrestling, ju-jitsu, and the French method of defence, in which the feet may be used. He punches with his feet more often than with his hands, and. while he uses his Vgs. he balances him so’* rather wonderfully on a powerful tail. “The College Widow.” a sparkling comedy-drama. starring Dolores Costello and WDlinm Collier, jun.. will also be included on the programme.
