“MONEY SHOULD NOT BE MADE FROM WATER”

BILL STRONGLY OPPOSED MT. ALBERT’S VIEWPOINT Strenuous opposition to the provisions of the proposed Auckland Water Supply Act was made in a motion passed by the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. The Auckland City Council sent a copy of the proposed. Act, but the meeting found that it would not be working in the interests of outside local bodies if it did not oppose the proposals. “It makes it quite open that the City Council can charge any price it likes,” said Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Mayor. “It can make a reasonable profit, but no profit should be made out of a water supply. We should oppose the provisions.” The Mayor added that the subject would be taken up by a conference of local bodies on Tuesday next. He urged that as many Mount Albert councillors as possibl© be present. “I don’t think that money should be made out of water,” said Cr. JP. Floyd. “We should fight the Bill. If we do that we will be doing a righteous thing for the local bodies.” The Mayor: The City Council would be able to do what it liked. Outside bodies would have no say. Discussion lapsed and the resolution opposing the proposals was carried unanimously. MANUKAU’S OPPOSITION Members of the Manukau County Council at the meeting yesterday voiced opposition to the proposed Water Supply Bill, being of the opinion that it required much consideration before approval should be given. A draft of the Bill was received from the Auckland City Council. The chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, referred to the legal opinion on the Bill given to the Onehunga Borough Council and said that in view of this opinion it would be unwise to approve the measure as it stood. Mr. F. Kearsley said that no vote should be taken until the delegates to a conference of local bodies liad reported. It was decided to defer the question until after the conference of local bodies on July 24. Th© chairman and Mr. S. W. House were appointed as the Manukau delegates.
