Havison, of Christchurch, is spending a holiday in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lukins, of Wellington, are guests at the Central Hotel. Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P., and Mrs. Lee returned to Wellington by the Limited last evening. * * * Mrs. Tyne and Miss W. Picken, of Remuera, have taken up their residence at “Braeburn.” * * * Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Adams, of Blenheim, is visiting Auckland, and is the guest of her mother, Airs. P. A. Lindsay, O’Rorke Street. Mr. and Airs. C. Clark, of Te Awamutu, Mr. and Airs. G. Hayward, oX Wellington, and Airs, and Aliss Speedy, of Hamilton, are staying at the Star Hotel, Airs. E. H. M. Luke, of Wellington, and Aliss C. Hosking, of Masterton, who were in Auckland' for a few days, left yesterday for a visit to Russell and Helensville. * * * Airs. Ilaviland, who has spent some months in New Zealand with her parents, their Excellencies Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson, left Wellington to-day en route to rejoin her husband in India. * * * Hr. P. Fennelly, LI IX, past president of rhe British Association of Practical Psychology, London, and Mrs. Fennelly, arrived from Sydney to-day by the Marama. They are staying at Cargen. Aliss Enid L. Ross, South Island representative for Metro - Gold wy n - Mayer films, who has been attending the annual conference of her organisation in Sydney, arrived in Auckland to-day on the Marama. Aliss Lorimer, ex-headmistress of Nelson Girls College, has been touring * n Belgium and Holland, and stayed a few days in Paris before going to Switzerland. QUEEN CARNIVAL POSITION OF QUEENS Great interest exists in the competition between the queens in the queen carnival, the latest counts of votes giving the position as follows: Junction Queen 2,480 Country Queen 2,400 Alaori Queen 2,280 Town Queen 2,260 GIFT AFTERNOON On Thursday a gift afternoon was. given in support of the Country Queen in the Plunket Rooms, at which there was a fair attendance. Three of the four queens were present. The programme consisted of musical items and competitions. The items were given by the following:—Musical trio, Mesdames AVoodlock. Cronin and Aliss Johnston: vocal solos by Alesdames Hussey, C. Richardson and Miss Johnston. The competitions were won by Airs. Cronin. Airs. E. P. Wood, Aliss Plunkett and Aliss P. York. HIGH SCHOOL DANCE TE PUKE FUNCTION The Te Puke High School pupils held a dance in the Parish Hall on Saturday to assist the fund for sending football and basketball teams to compete in the Bay of Plenty schools' championship shield tournament at the end of the month. WEDDING BELLS LUGDEN-^ASHLEY At the residence of Air. M. Ashley, Ohakune Junction, a pretty wedding was celebrated last week between Aliss Eileen Ashley and Mr. Robert Lugden. The bride, who was given away by her father, was charmingly dressed in pale pink satin, with silver lace, and wore a bridal veil of orange blossoms. . She was attended by her sister, Aliss Kathleen Ashley, as bridesmaid, who wore a dainty frock of mauve satin with silver lace. Air. AY. Robinson, jun., acted as best man. A reception was held after the ceremony, when about forty guests were entertained. ENGAGEMENTS The engagement is x announced of Kathleen, second daughter of Mr. and Airs. \V. Saxon, of Clarence Street, Ponsonby, to Frank, only son of Air. and Airs. R. Cunningham, of Richmond Road, Ponsonby. PLAY-READING A very successful reading of Clemence Dane’s powerful play, “A Bill of Divorcement,” was given by the play-reading circl'e at Mrs. RussellWood’s home in Mount Street last evening. The parts were well sustained and were taken by the following readers: Margaret Fairfield, Miss Iza Montgomery; Hester Fairfield,'Miss Asher; Sydney Fairfield, Miss Edna Thomas; Bassett (a maid), Miss R. Esmond Sharp To clean dirty brass knobs, soak a soft cloth in cloudy ammonia. Rub while wet on a bar of sand-soap. Rub hard over the knob, then polish with a dry cloth. A good linen sheet, hemstitched With a two-inch hem, makes an inexpensive easily-washed and light-to-handle bedspread. When thickening stews or curries try adding about a handful of sago instead of the usual thickening.
