Judge Tempted

Fascination of Felony MR. JUSTICE HERDMAN IN LONDON Mr. Justice Herdman has been tempted in London—and tempted to break the law. At a recent luncheon lie declared amid laughter: “As I watch these policemen with their dignity and their power I almost feel that the man who is arrested by men of that type achieves a sort of distinction. Indeed the temptation to commit a felony has been almost irresistible.” The former Attorney-General of New Zealand was a guests of honour with the Hon. G. J. Anderson, at a luncheon given by the High Commissioner. Sir James Parr at tho British Empire Club last month. Proposing the toast of the High Commissioner, Mr. Justice Herdman said (according to the “New Zealand News”) : “London is a wonderful place. What impresses me is the patience of the people, their steadiness, their solidity. I get into a bus at Kensington with a desire to go to the Bank. We get in a traffic block at Ludgate Hill and remain for about half an hour, but there are no signs of impatience. Men go on reading their papers, women powder their poses, and the bus drivers exchange jokes. “Then there is the courtesy of the people and the police. I have had the temerity to buy a car and the still greater temerity to drive it about the London streets. 1 have escaped premature transportation to Paradise or the dock with the help of Providence and the London police.”
