66 YEARS’ SERVICE CAPTAIN SMITH’S 80TH BIRTHDAY Celebrating his 80th birthday this wc;ek, Captain R. E. Smith is able to review with satisfaction the 66 years of his life spent at sea. Captain Smith is known throughout New Zealand and Australia as a Union Seam Ship Company master, and for 36 years he was associated with that company., joining it two years after its foundation Born in Cornwall, he went to sea at the age of 14, and in his early sea life served on ships engaged on the EastIndian and other trades. Stories of gold discoveries lured him to the other hemisphere, and he came to New Zealand in 1870. During his years of service he commanded 22 vessels, among them the Tarawera, Mokoia, Talune and Mararoa. The Warrimoo he took to South Africa during the Boer War. He retired from the Union Company in 1911, but he left the sea finally only last year. During his years at sea he never lost a vessel or had an accident.
