MAORI AS A SUBJECT
LECTURESHIP PROPOSED UNIVERSITY COUNCIL SYMPATHETIC The Auckland University Council has sympathy with the suggestion that there should be a lectureship in Maori at the college. At yesterday’s meeting of the council, a letter was received from Te Akarana Maori Association asking that the lectureship should be established. The letter stated th»* Maori was now a B.A. pass subject, and as the bulk of the native population was in Auckland Province, it was fittting that the beginning should be made at the Auckland College. The president of the council, Sir George Fowlds, said he hoped the day was not far distant when there would be more than a lectureship in Maori. The present difficulty was lack of funds; but the council was thoroughly in sympathy with the suggestion if Te Akarana Association could suggest ways and means. a Member: Here’s a good chance for some wealthy Maori. Professor Worley said he would like to see something broader than a lectureship. It would give an excellent opportunity for someone to do valuable ethnological research. It was decided to discuss the proposal further with the association, the president remarking that there was a possibility of money coming from other sources.
