300 Tons of Clothes Speedily Distributed

C.T.’S GREAT EFFORT 40 LOADS THIS MORNING The distribution of the 300 tons of clothing collected in the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association drive will be completed by this evening. Forty lorries had left the Drill Hall for distribution by 10 o’clock this morning. The organisation for this remarkably speedy work was done by Messrs. A. Thompson and H. Davy, who were given the responsibility for the work after the allocation had been decided on at a conference between the Commercial Travellers and tbe executive appointed by city charitable organisations. Immediately the quotas to be distributed were decided upon, the 300 tons of clothing were divided into 13 huge heaps. Cards were then made out by Messrs. Thompson and Davy, and the representatives of the different charitable organisations were instructed at what time their lorries were to call. The work has been going on steadily through the day, and it is expected that the Drill Hall will be clear this evening. When the last drive was held, 25 per cent, less clothing was collected, yet it took 150 w'orkers a week to clear the hall. FOR MAORIS TOO For the benefit of Maoris in the back country, a quantity of blankets and clothing is being set aside from the collection for charity made on Saturday by the Auckland Commercial Travelers and Warehousemen's Association. Some of the natives in the more remote areas, particularly the gumfields of North Auckland, are underclad. A special committee of social workers will attend to the requirements of the Maoris. It is now estimated that the net benefit to the poor from the proceeds of the drive will be about £12,300 The clothing is being sorted into 27 distribution groups by 150 workers. Applications for assistance, which should be made to charitable organisations, are still being received.
