NO STREET COLLECTION

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME ONEHUNGA’S OPINION An application by the Auckland Play Association for permission to take up a street collection in Onehunga provoked a brisk discussion at the Onehunga Borough Council last evening. Cr. R. G. Speight said that the time had arrived when street collections should be curtailed. The times were hard, he said, and shopkeepers were complaining that street collections were interfering with business. Further, that the benefits of the Play Association, although doing good work, were restricted to the city, and charity began at home. The Mayor said that a street collection in .Onehunga involved the services of some 70 women helpers. It was making too heavy a call on their time, besides draining the borough of

money required for its own needy children. Cr. Stoupe said that the association would supply its own collectors and the collection would do no harm to the town. “If it does some good to some children somewhere, I am in favour of permission being given,” he continued. Cr. Campling said that local benefits to the young had always been hampered by lack of funds, and there were plenty of cases in Onehunga requiring assistance. Permission was declined by five votes to four.
