STRONG GRAMMAR PACK OVERWHELMS VARSITY
WHITES’ DAY OUT Even the best of teams has an offday occasionally, and Grammar took full advantage of Varsity’s ‘‘indisposition” on Saturday. From whistle to whistle the honours of the game were all to Grammar, and although there was only a six-point difference in the final score, the Blues at no time looked like snatching a victory. Varsity’s hooking, which is of a high standard and has been invaluable £o the team, was entirely disorganised by a rearrangement of the scrum, and the heavy Grammar forwards walked the students off the ball. Varsity forwards seemed to be stale except for Linton, whose consistently keen play was seconded at times by Brooker and Anderson. Millar, who played such ,a fine game last Saturday week, was still suffering from the effects of a knock he received in the Manukau game. Best of the inside backs was Jenkin, whose game tackling shook some of the White packmen on occasion. Dickson was right off form and could do nothing right. Minn s, though starved for the ball, played his usual sterling game, while Goodwin, who looked like producing fireworks on the other
wing, trailed off as the game proceeded. Bush, though by no means a broken reed, was obviously not at the top of his form. To the Knight brothers, stalwarts of the Old Boys’ pack, goes much of the credit of the game. Both big men, they used their weight and strength with good effect. Batty and Wilson were also well in the hunt. Weir gave a pleasing exhibition behind the scrum, and his efforts w*ere ably carried by Badeley. Skelton played bright football with the one ■devastating mistake of hanging on too long. Olsen was the best of a threequarter line that kept at Varsity all the time without giving the Blues respite or opportunity to attack. Wilson at fullback had an easy day. Mr. F. E. Sullivan was the referee.
