I! ... ■ WAIHI INTERESTS RESIGNATION OF POSTMASTER. Mr. TV. U. R. Free, who had a breakdown in health some months ago. has resigned from his position as postmaster at Waihi, and will be relieved at the end of the px*esent month. Mr. and Mrs. Free intend making their future home in Auckland. * * * Mr. Douglas Cole, who has been first assistant at the Waihi East School for over three years, has accepted a position on the staff of the Dargavillc High School. Both as player and member of the local executive of Rugby football Mr. Cole has done a lot for the sport, and his departure will be a distinct loss to Waihi. * * * At the Waihi Magistrate’s Court or Friday Bertram Hunter, a middle-aged man, charged with drunkenness and breach of his prohibition order, was committed to Roto Roa, Fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Thomas, of Walmsley Road, Waihi were married in the Parish Church ol Pendeen, Cornwall (England), and on Saturday their children, relatives and friends met to help them celebrate the golden wedding. Mr. Thomas is the fifth son of the late Mr. Thomas Thomas, of Trewellard, Cornwall, and Mrs. Thomas was Miss Grace Nicholas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Nicholas, of Pendeen, Cornwall. On the day’ following their wedding Mr. and Mrs. Thomas left for New Zealand on the ship Waitangi (Captain Hodder) and landed at Port "Lyttelton. After living in Timaru for four years the couple crossed to Australia, residing in Victoria and Tasmania for about 25 y’ears. Coming back to Ne% Zealand in 1906 they* settled in Waihi. where they have resided ever since. Four sons, and three daughters, together with eight grandchildren, shared in the celebration of the happy event.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH BRIDGE OVER ONEPOTO STREAM Preliminary work in constructing the new bridge over the Onepoto Stream to replace the present old structure which connects Gordon Road with Renshaw Bros.’ Waimana Estate has been commenced. A contract has been let to Mr. W Waters for the approach from Gordon Road by the owners and is being subsidised by the Xorthcote Borough Council to the amount of .£2OO. The plans for the new bridge have been approved of by the Auckland Harbour Board and the Borough Council. The plans provide for a three-span bridge 65ft in length, with earth embankment* and approaches. When completed the work will open up a large area oi building sections overlooking the Waitemata. The congestion at the wharf and its approaches have been receiving the attention of the council, and the overseer’s reports on this matter have been adopted. A parking area on the west side of Queen Street, 250 ft above the wharf, with a total length of 20Wt. has been set aside for this purpose. Vehicles waiting for the vehicular traffic boat are not to be allowed on the wharf, but must wait on the eastern side of Queen Street till berthing takes place. The overseer also recommends that the Waitemata Bus Company be asked to discharge passengers before preparing to turn for tii© return trip and that during rush hours the company be required to dispatch vehicles without passing one another.

Bro. Vice-President Dr. W. J. Craven presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead and Northcote Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance. D. general manager of the Westfield Company, in making the presentation referred to the high esteem in which their guest was held by his fellow workers and the officials of the company. TAURANGA NEWS The Tauranga County Council met last week, Mr. R. King presiding. The secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ Association forwarded counsel’s opinion to the effect that the rate* should be struck on the new valuation roll supplied to the council last May. The Valuation Department advised that the Assessment Court would probably sit on July 27. The council appointed Mr. W. A. Bennett as its assessor.
