SOUTH ISLAND SPEED

NEW PLANE’S RECORD CHRISTCHURCH TO TIMARU (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. From CHristcfiurch to Timaru in 35 minutes, and back in half an hour, was the record speed of Captain J. F. Findlay in the new Glos-ter-Grebe plane, belonging to the Wigram Airdrome Captain Findlay left Wigram at 2.30 p.m., about a quarter of an hour after the two Bristol fighters which were flown by Captains M. Buckley and N. Barlow, and all three machines arrived at Timaru at about five minutes past three. Timaru people were treated to an exhibition of “stunting” for a quarter of an hour, after which the airplanes set out for Sockburn again. The Grebe arrived back at 3.50, while the Bristol fighters came in about 20 minutes later. Although this is probably the fastest trip that has ever been made in New Zealand the Grebe was flown considerably below its maximum speed. The air distance is approximately 75 miles.
