WAIKIKI NOT AS GOOD AS BEACHES OF N.Z.
“MINTIES KING’S” OPINION Introduced by a friend as the “Minties King,” Mr. Edward Stedman, well-known manufacturer of sweets, of Sydney, has just made the round Pacific trip when he spoke to a SUN reporter on the Aorangi yesterday. THE beautifully laid out gardens of Hawaii and the hotels, he said, were splendid, but he found the climate over-bearing. The beach was no better than those of New Zealand and Australia. Compared with Bond* and Coogee, Waikiki fell decidedly into third place. Honolulu, he said, seemed to be run by the industrious Japanese, with the Americans in command. The native Hawaiians seemed to be full of the langour of the Pacific. Mr. Stedman, who is accompanied by his wife, is of the firm of Stedman, Henderson Sweets, Ltd., the manufacturers of “Minties.” The firm is renovating premises in Graham Street, preparatory to opening up a manufacturing branch in Auckland. “NOT UP TO MILFORD” MR. HARDLEY BACK FROM HONOLULU “Waikiki is not to be compared With Milford. There is nothing like the stretch of clean sand there, although attempts are made to get the South Sea atmosphere with Hawaiians singing on the beach.” This is the opinion of Mr. S. ITardley and his son, Mr. Alfred Hardley, of Hardley’s, Ltd., who returned by the Aorangi after six weeks’ tour. They were accompanied by Mrs. S. Hardley and a daughter, Mrs. Steele. Glorious weather and smooth seas favoured them all the way, and at Honolulu they spent much of their time in the long Pacific combers. Mr. Hardley, jun., was just getting proficient with one of the long surfboards, on which one may stand and shoot up the beach, when he came away. But he still prefers Auckland beaches.
The lavish hotels of Honolulu did not appeal very much to Mr. Hardley, sen. “They serve up a tremendous amount of Oriental stuff,” he said, “and I found I could not eat it.”
