EMPLOYER PLEADS FOR DRINK-SODDEN WORKMAN

“SEND HIM TO ROTO ROA” “He is an old man and has been in my employ for many years. There is nothing really criminal about him, but he is a slave to drink. “If you could send him to Roto Roa it would be the best thing possible. He wants to go, and has asked me whether I could arrange it.” This appeal for leniency was made by Mr. Le Roy to Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.. for John Patrick Phillips, aged 62, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with the theft of £5 7s from his late employers. E. Lo Roy and Co Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that Phillips had concealed himself in the building and robbed the till after lockup time. He had spent all the money in drink and was still suffering from its effects, while his wife and children were neglected. Electing to be dealt with summarily and pleading guilty, Phillips was rel manded for a week.
