DISTRICT VISITORS FAVOUR PROPOSAL J RELIEF FOR DISTRESS representatives of the Poverty Bay and the Franklin County courts at the Auckland Winter Exhibition think that support should be given people taking over small areas of land for farm- “ There is probably no more important subject at present than relieving unemployment and distress;” said Mr. A. Mitchell at a dinner given by the , district courts on Saturday evening. j “In a measure, a visit to the courts , at the show is a means of showing ! how the problem may be surmounted. The exhibits of vegetables, fruits and root crops are, in many instances, grown on small areas of land. “In the policy of getting produce from farmlets, there is an opportunity to relieve unemployment. A ready market can always be found for the product. If more workers were found for small holdings, much of the distress in cities like Auckland would disappear.” Mr. G. Garton, of Poverty Bay, commended the suggestion that unemployment could be lessened were more people to take up small farms. Mr. A. F. Brown, for Franklin, congratulated Poverty Bay on winning the district courts’ prize. Franklin would be a competitor again next year Mr. Garton replied for Poverty Bay.
