win for McCarthy WELLS SEVERELY PUNISHED (From Our Oicn Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. The star bout of the Opotiki Boxing Association’s carnival on Saturday evening was between C. McCarthy, Auckland, 12st. 41b., and S. Wells, Opotiki, 14st. 9lb. In the first round the Opotiki boxer lead easily, but the second was more even. Both gave of their best in the third round, which was even, but Wells showed signs of tiring in the fourth, which was characterised by fierce fighting. McCarthy showed to advantage in the fifth term, Wells hanging on. Both were very weak, McCarthy winning the round. McCarthy showed better staying power in the last round and severely punished Wells, who was helpless at the end, allowing the Aucklander to hit him at will. McCarthy was very weak, and despite the fact that he connected to the jaw with many blows, he could not knock out the Opotiki man. McCarthy received the decision. In a three-round bout J. Pyne, Whakatane, 9st., was declared the winner over E. Day, Opotiki, Sst. 71b., the referee, Mr. AY. Carruthers, stopping the fight in the last round. S. Matchitt, Opotiki, lOst. 131 b., defeated J Ripaki, Tirohanga, lost. 51b., the latter retiring in the third round. T. Selwyn, Opotiki, lOst. 21b., defeated G. Lysaght, Kutarere, 9st. 51b. * on points in a four-round bout. The loser was presented with a special trophy by Mr. O’Sullivan for his fine R. Parkinson, Opotiki, list. 31b., defeated T. Doulton, Taneatua, list. 21b. In the second round Parkinson knocked down Doulton for a count of eight, the gong saving him. The referee awarded the fight to Parkinson. A. Kinley, Nukuhoau, 9st. 51b., and Dawson, Whakatane, Sst. 101 b., found a three-round draw. G. Savage, Matata, lOst. 101 b., defeated S. Goulsmith, Waioeka, lOst. 101 b,. over three rounds.
