Kingsford Smith’s Backer Wrecked on Arctic Island
YACHT HIGH AND DRY /United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and X.Z. Press Associativa.) (United Service) Received 9.5 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO. Friday. THE yacht Oaxaca, owned and sailed by Mr. Allan Hancock, backer of the Southern Cross flyers, ran ashore on Friday on an Arctic island. The yacht was on a pleasure voyage.
A message from Ketchikan. Alaska, says the Oaxaca is ashore on the rocks, high and dry in the Wrangel Narrows. Her fifteen passengers and crew of 35 are believed to be safe. At the time of the Pacific flight, the following message came from San Francisco: Only four members of the crew of the Southern Cross will share in the profit resulting from the flight, so it was said on behalf of Mr. Allan Hancock, their backer. Mr. Raymond Stephens. Mr. Hancock's attorney, explained that his client desires no personal gain from the flight. He said the Los Angeles banker desired to encourage aerial navigation, and to show his admiration of the perseverance of Captain Kingsford Smith and Lieutenant Ulm.
} Mr. Hancok sailed for Mexico on the day that the Southern Cross took off from Oakland. He was not then aware that his connection with the flight was to become published, but he wirelessed permission to-day that his association with it be be explained. The statement by Mr. Stephens revealed that, deprived of the backing which they expected when they left Australia, Captain Smith and Lieutenant Ulm found themselves stranded, with the plane mortgaged, to stay within the boundaries of California. | Also, they had insufficient equipment and numerous debts. They met Mr. Hancock through Mr. Andrew Chaffey, the Los Angeles bank president. Mr. Hancock immediately became interested in the flyers, took a short flight with them, and then advanced the necessary funds Cor the project. Another message said Mr. Hancock had decided t<> make a sift of the Southern Cross to the airmen.
