The Tauranga Fire Board held its quarterly meeting on odnesday. In the absence of Mr. Dive, chairman, Mr. IL Clay acted as chairman. The superintendent reported that the brigade had received one call during the quarter. Two members had resigned. and their places were nhed b> the appointment of Messrs. X. Gninths and D. McPhail. The chairman, secretary and superintendent arc to wait upon the postmaster in regard to the wiring oi the alarm system.
The Borough Council monthly meeting was held on Wednesday evening. A joint committee of the Borough council and Chamber of Commerce reported upon suggested improvements to the camping grounds on the beach front in Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Avenues, and recommended that conveniences and an electric cooking stand be erected. A deputation from the eßturned Soldiers’ Association waited upon the council asking it to go on with some public work for the unemployed. They offered to make a donation of Lt>o from their funds. As temporary work has been found for the men the question was deferred. It was resolved to support the request of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce that the Government be urged to inquire into the establishing of wood pulp works. The Chamber of Commerce asked the council to take steps to have public salt-water baths erected at once. The question was referred to the Baths Committee.
•* * * At the Tauranga County Council meeting Mr. H. Lewis, of Cambridge, was appointed county clerk. Mr. Lewis was for some time clerk to the Matanaata County Council, and was lately connected with various public bodies.
HAURAKI INTERESTS | Tlie Hauraki Plains County Council met at Ngatea on Thursday. Cr. C. W. Parfitt presiding. The engineer, Mr. F. Basham, reported that the continuous showery weather was causing the main highways to show signs of wear. Owing to flooding the metal landing stage at Ilikutaia quarry had been undermined and consequently had had to be dismantled. Cr. Miller reported that the cheese factory suppliers had offered to contribute to the cost of repairing the Kopuarahi wharf. They had been in communication with the shipping company whose steamer had wrecked the wharf. Repairs were authorised out of Kopuarahi and Horahia riding funds. Tho treasurer, Mr. E. A. Mahoney, reported that judgment had been obtained or would shortly be obtained for all outstanding rates. The penalty of 10 per cent, will be imposed as from February 29, 1928. The receipts for the month totalled £1,640 10s sd, including £1,347 10s 2d from rates. £126 ISs 7d from ferries, and £66 12s lOd from licences. The newly-appointed county inspector, Mr. William White, reported that an electrical device for the control of speed of motor vehicles would shortly be in use. He advocated the acquisi--tion of-loud meters for weighing motor and drew attention to the fact that proper speed limit notice-boards should be erected. It was decided to erect notice-boards and to procure load-weighing machines. Mr. Whit© was appointed inspector of noxious weeds. Notice to strike a rate of in tho £ for the Hauraki Plains West water supply was given by Cr. Parf\tt. Advice was received that the Highways Board would advance the money necessary for the replacement of the Waitakaruru stream bridge at six per cent, interest. Advice was received that the Patetonga riding ratepayers were agreeable for the riding roading scheme to be on the comprehensive basis as suggested by the Local Government Loans Boa.rd, and that, if possible, the Patetonga South special road loan be ab sorbed in the proposed loan. It was agreed to proceed with th* loan proposal, but not to absorb th# South Road loan. It was decided to make representations to the Railway Department for better unloading facilities at Kopu station. * * 4= A satisfactory tender for the collection of whole milk having been received, the settlers of the PipiroaWaitakarmu road and the Maukuro Canal road Waitakaruru, have decided to take up sufficient shares in the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company to enable it to erect a four-vat cheese factory at the corner of the two roads. Tho company liopA to have a factory capable of dealing with the milk of SOU cows ready for operation by the beginning of November. Its cost Will bo approximately £S,OOO. Tho collecting of whole milk by a contractor for a cheeso factory is an innovation that will be watched with interest by other cheese factory suppliers.
