EMIL JANNINGS
OFTEN WENT HUNGRY ONCE CLEANED 'SHOES Emil Jannings Is a star who has risen from the ranks. His first Job was as general servant to the members of a travelling theatrical troupe in Germany. He cleaned shoes, took care of costumes, washed linen and understudied every part in the repertory of plays. This was when Jannlngs was lfi. and on his own for the second time in his life. He ran away at the age of 14 and stowed himself aboard a tramp steamer at Hamburg, London bound. The second time Jannings ran away, he joined the strolling players and stayed with them until he was well started on a theatrical career. His father, thinking he would tire of the life, made no effort to bring him back. They often went hungry, tramping up and down the length and breadth of Germany. The time came when the company found a small theatre where they could remain a while and give shows. Shortly after, Jannings got work in a regular stock company, and from then on road vagabondage was a thing of the past.
