ST. JAMES THEATRE

LAST NIGHT OF “ARCHIE” Although its popularity has not waned in the slightest, “Archie” will be presented for the last time this evening. There was also a matinee this afternoon. “Archie,” one of the best mounted shows seen in Auckland, simmers with excellent humour from start to finish. Jimmy Godden and Elsie Prince carry the light work with engaging ease. The other' parts are happily filled too, and the result is a superbly balanced cast, working brilliantly together. The comedy is delightfully inconsequential, but it has the exhilarating champagne effect. The music, too, has a light inspiring quality that sets the feet tapping as the entrancing rhythms sweep on. On Monday evening the company will produce “Sunny,” a show coming with a big reputation. It is full of delightful music, brilliant dancing, and superb comedy. There are 11 scenes in the play, and each of the songs has the proper atmospheric setting. There is a diverting story woven into the show, and it moves along steadily from situation to situation. Elsie Prince, the “Sunny” of the piece, is a bright soul who flees home to escape an unloved suitor. On a sea voyage she uses her charming wiles in an attempt to rekindle the ardour of a swain grown cold. Jimmy Godden will have his share of the comedy opportunities. The dressing is a feature of the si low, and the dancing and choruses will contribute a considerable share to its brightness.
