TWO TREKKERS RESCUED
Matmgren Dead a Month
GRIM DRAMA OF ARCTIC
No Food for Two Weeks
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A.—United Service) Received 9.5 a.m. MOSCOW, Thursday. FE Russian ice-breaker Krassin has rescued Commandant Zappi and Commandant Mariano, but Professor Malmgren, the Swedish scientist, had been dead a month.
These three of the Italia’s men comprised the trekking party, which left the others and set out over the icy wastes for the steamer Hobby. The Krassin, at 6.40 a.m., found Pro
fessor Malmgren’s companions at about 80.39 north by 26.07 east. Mariano and Zappi were cheerful, though they had not eaten for 13 days. HOPE FOR OTHER PARTY The Krassin took them aboard and continued in the direction of Signor Viglieri’s party, which is 20 miles away. At latest reports she was making good progress, there being much free water. Another message says Zappi and Mariano were half-frozen and exhausted when they were found. They say they had abandoned hope. One of Mariano’s legs is useless. Malmgren’s body is aboard the Krassin. There are five in Viglieri’s party, with which General Nobile was before his rescue. As a result of the return of normal magnetic conditions in the Arctic the wireless operator of the Citti di Milano, the supply ship of the wrecked airship Italia, has restored wireless communication with Signor Viglieri, leader of the survivors of General Nobile’s party who are still on the ice-floe. The present position of the castaways is given as north of North East Land.
