Aucklanders Have Successful Day
TWO WINS AT TRENTHAM HENDERSON IN FORM AGAIN (Special to THE SUNJ WELLINGTON, Thursday. Nukumai registered a performance of great merit to-day, when he was beaten by only a neck in the Parliamentary Handicap. Bowling along m front in great style entering the straight, it certainly seemed as if he would outclass his opponents, but over the last 25 yards the light-weight Bisox wore him down and secured the verdict. In defeat Nukumai put up a remarkably fine performance, demonstrating beyond doubt that he is right at the top of his form. The track for the second day of the meeting was in a very heavy state. The totalisator handled £29,6421-, against £39,053 on the second day last year. Quincoma had little difficulty in disposing of his opponents in the Corunna Plurdles. He was always handily placed, and four furlongs from home it was palpable that he would have to fall to loose. Once over the last fence he galloped in leisurely style and easily beat Sir Moment by two lengths. The latter finished on well over the last two furlongs, but he never had a chance with the winner. Lady Passenger ran a good race into third place, and Red Bank was close up fourth. Chickwheat jumped badly and was never in the hunt.. Maiden Handicap The Maiden Handicap resulted in a comfortable victory for the three-year-old Gold Cure. He ran an excellent race into fourth place in the Trial Plate on the opening day, and on that
form he looked to have a good chance to-day. tie was always in the firingline, and at the false rail he shot to the front without effort and came on to beat the favourite, Mark Mint, by two lengths. Mark Mint was always near the leaders, and though he made a determined effort a furlong from home, he was making little impression on Gold Cure at the end. Otairi ran a fairly good race into third place, and Veronese, who finished fourth, also did well. Greyfinch was handy enough at the home bend to win, but she was under pressure a long way from the post Seatoun Handicap King Mart improved considerably on his first day’s effort to win the Seatoun Handicap. He made a fast run soon after entering the straight, and though strongly challenged first by Maui and then by Marjoram, he hung on well to beat the latter by a length. The others were well beaten. Jovial ened danger, and Freeze Out failed to repeat his first' day’s effort. Hack Steeplechase
Mainspring scored an easy victory in the Second Hack Steeplechase. When Jovial came to grief about six furlongs from home he was left in the lead, and once over the last obstacle he experienced little difficulty in beating Askari by four lengths. The latter, who was at a good price, fenced well all the way, and ho may not be long getting on the winning list. San Fera did not perform as well as on the opening day. The others ere well beaten. Jovial was going in great style when he fell, and with a stand-up he would have participated in the finish. Parliamentary Handicap
Bisox ran prominently in the Whyte Memorial, won by Black Mint, on the opening day, but she was allowed to go out paying a good price in the Parliamentary Handicap. In the early part she was in the middle of the iield, but once turned for home she came through with a fast run and defeated Nukumai by a short neck. When Nukumai Led into the straight he looked certain to win, but he could not withstand Bisox’s strong challenge. Ring Boy, after always being in the thick of the tight, tired into third place, and of the others Royal Mint and Black Mint did best. Jumpers as Gallopers Nucleus was considered to hold a mortgage on the High-weight Handicap, but after apparently having every chance sh& failed to do better than run fifth. The winner turned up in the little-fancied Patuki. He gradually closed on the leaders three furlongs from home, and at the false rail he went past Lady Gay witnout an effort. However, he had to be kept going over the concluding stages to beat No Favours, who finished wide out, by a head. Lady Gay was mac. far too much use of, and more patiently handled would have made the winner’s task much harder. Peneus showed plenty of speed, but he was found wanting with a furlong to go. Members’ Handicap King Lu registered a sterling performance in the Members’ Handicap. Entering the straight he was lying just in behind Ballymoy II and Cheione, but at the false rail he shot to the front, and in a thrilling finish beat Taboo by a short neck. With two furlongs covered Ballymoy 11, Oration, Cheione and King Lu were prominent, and entering the straight Ballymoy II showed the way to Cheione, King Lu, Ronaki, Duke Abbey and Taboo, who was making a fast run on the inside. King Lu was in front inside the tance, his nearest attendants being Duke Abbey, Cheione and Ballymoy 11. A hundred yards from the post Taboo came with a strong challenge, but he failed to reach King Lu by a neck. Duke Abbey was a head away third, followed closely by Royal Damon, Beaumont, Cheione and Hairy Herald. Petone Handicap Imarosebud scored a surprise victory in the Petone Handicap. The three-year-old filly was in a handy position turning into the straight, but Henderson dashed her into the lead half-way down the running, and she went on to beat Greymist by a length and a-half. Monsogne, who came with a late run on the outside, was a length away third, while Callanmore, after being prominent into the straight, was beaten into fourth place. Monsogne* struck trouble at the false rail, and with a clear run would have been difficult to dispose of. Meadowlark, the favourite, had every chance, but was well beaten at the end.
