HAURAKI PLAINS WEST
NEW BOARD'S MEETING The trustees of the newly constituted Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board held their first meeting at Ngatea on Wednesday and appointed Mr. C. W. Parfitt chairman of the board. Mr E. L. Walton, solicitor, of Ngatea, was appointed clerk pro tern. Advice was received that the Government had made a grant of £1,450 for the provision of floodgates at Pipiroa, llopai and Rawerawe, and that favourable consideration would be given the question of subsidising the money spent by the board on maintenance of drains at the rate of 10s in the £ in the first year, 8s in the £ in the second year, and so on, diminishing by 2s each year. Instead of the Department levying a maintenance rate for the whole of the year in which the board came into being and refunding the unexpended balance to the Drainage Board, it was proposed to levy a rate just sufficient to reimburse the department for its expenditure in the area during the portion of the year it was in control.
