VALUELESS CHEQUE ISSUED
THOUGHT ACCOUNT IN CREDIT MAGISTRATE DISBELIEVES STORY (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, Thursday. If William Frank Perfect had acted up to his name, he would not have had to face Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, on a charge of issuing a valueless cheque to the licenc-ee of the Opotiki Hotel.
Sergeant McAllister read a statement made by accused, in which he admitted signing a cheque when under the influence of liquor. Accused had been in the same trouble before. Accused said he thought he still had money to his credit at the Ohakune bank, and as soon as he discovered the cheque h£?d been dishonoured, he offered to pay the licencee the £ 5 back. The magistrate, after saying there was very little in defendant’s story, remarked that it was only the fact that accused paid the money back that saved him on the present occasion. Accused was admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to pay costs. Mr. Levvey issued a strong warning that any similar offence in the future by accused would be severely dealt with. ,
