EVERYBODY’S

“METROPOLIS” Scientific progress is weighed in the balance and pronounced to be found wanting, in “Metropolis,” which is now showing for an extended season at Everybody’s Theatre. “Metropolis” presents a mighty city a hundred years hence, with millions of inhabitants who are but cogs, working mechanically in the complex machinery of simplified living that is controlled by Masterman, the mastermind, founder of “Metropolis.” A scientist named Rotwang creates a mechanical woman, who is made in the image of Mary, the advocate for the workmen. This

machine, however, runs wild and incites the workmen to destroy the city. Threaded through the picture is the love story of Eric, Masterman’s son, and Mary. The “human element” is apparently unavoidable, even in the best of films, and must be endured patiently. From the cast two stand out— Brigette Helm as Mary, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge as Ro twang. Brigette Helm has a part with remarkable opportunities, of which she makes the most. Her performance as the machine woman is splendid acting.
