POURI’S BIG WIN

Took on Beau Cavalier At Most Of The Jumps KAWINI SECURES ANOTHER SECOND (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. THE racing at Trentham to-day was responsible for important developments bearing - on such events as the Grand National Hurdles, Winter Cup, and Grand National Steeplechase, which will come up for decision at Riccarton next month. It was also responsible for the downfall of the A.J.C. Derby candidate, Roscrea, who was regarded by astute judges as certain to win the Trial Plate; but a feature of the day’s racing was the brilliant victory of Gaze in the Trentham Hurdles. He won like a champion.

The Wellington Racing Clup opened its winter carnival at Trentham to-day in bright, sunny weather, before a large crowd. There were visitors in attendance from all centres of the Dominion, and racing throughout the day was keen and exciting. The totalisator handled £48,679J, as against on the corresponding day last year. The stewards decided against the eligibility of Mark Mint and Rameses to run in the Trial Plate, and those horses were subsequently withdrawn. It was contended that as they had won races to the total value of over £IOO they were ineligible to start. The track was in a very heavy state. Hack Hurdles In a good betting race, Sir Moment had a call over Troilus in the betting on the Vittoria Hurdles, but there was also solid support for the bracket, Ata-reria-Home Made. Ruby Ring was the early leader, but seven furlongs from home Troilus went to the front and he led around the far turn from Home Made, Sir Moment, Ruby Ring and San Pedro. Troilus and Home Made were together entering the straight, but the latter blundered at the last obstacle and nearly came to grief. Troilus appeared to have the race well in hand after crossing the last hurdle, but San Pedro came with a late run and in a stirring finish got up in time to win by half a length. Home Made was . three lengths back in third place, followed by Sir Moment and Atareria. It was a good peformance on the part of San Pedro, for he had to make up a good deal of ground over the last two furlongs. Unfortunately he returned to the birdcage showing a decided limp. Home Made was going well when he blundered and should be a difficult horse to beat at his next start. Atareria was travelling nicely seven furlongs from home, but from then on jumped badly. Trial Plate The Rossendale youngster Roscrea made a gallant effort to win the Trial Plate, but after showing rare gameness he had to be content with second place. Toxeuma, who races in the ownership of Mr. F. Ormond, was confidently backed by his party, and by beginning from an outside position at the barrier and leading all the way, he put up a very creditable performance. With Solgele he led into the straight, and though strongly _ challenged by Roscrea he finished in excellent style and won by a length. The soft track did not enhance Roscrea’s chance,- and two furlongs from home it was palpable that he was struggling in the going. Consent had every chance, but was beaten into third place, and of the other defeated runners Gold Cure and Dancing Star did best. Toxeuma, who is by Arrowsmith from Te Aupaki, is a promising youngster, and now that he has struck form he may go on winning. Hack Steeplechase The Hack Steeplechase resulted in a close victory for the favourite, Matu. For the first mile he was well back, but over the last five furlongs he gradually improved his position. Turning for home he was just in behind Radiate, Mainspring and San Fera. but once over the last fence he finished strongly to beat Radiate by a length and a-half. The latter was always handily placed, but was beaten on his merits. San Fera displayed gameness over the last furlong and was well up in third place, several lengths clear of Mainspring, Jovial and Captain Sarto. Oriflamb and Sir Wai gave poor displays and were a long' way behind at the end. Stewards' Handicap Taboo, who is regarded as one of tlie best mudlarks in the Dominion, registered a performance of high merit in the Stewards’ Handicap, when, in a thrilling finish, he flashed past the judge with a head to spare from Panther. In the early stages he was not conspicuous, but once on the road for home he unwound an irresistible run, and cutting down the leaders one by one he went on to score a fine victory. Panther, who was at a great price on

the machine, revelled in the heavy going - , and being in the van Duke Abbey for the greater part of the journey, succumbed only in the last few strides. Duke Abbey was well handled by Roy Reed and put up a good race to get third place. King Lu was handy at the turn and then unaccountably faded out. Ring Boy and Monoghan did best of the remainder. Trentham Hurdles The Trentham Hurdles is generally looked upon as a good guide for the £I,OOO Winter Hurdles run on the concluding day of the meeting, and the placed horses in to-day’s event should again race prominently on Saturday. Gaze was backed down to favourite, and he thoroughly justified the heavy support accorded him. For the first mile he was a long way out of his ground, and along the back his prospects of winning looked anything but bright. Four furlongs from home however, he gradually improved his position, and turning into the straight he was in fifth place. At the false rail he unwound a brilliant run, and taking the last hurdle in his stride he quickly headed the opposition and went on to beat Aberfeldy by a length and a-half. The latter was well up for the first six furlongs, but along the back he lost his position through a faulty jump, and at that stage, five furlongs from home, was standing up the leaders at least 10 lengths start. However, just before entering the straight he made a fast move on the outside and was less than a length behind Brigadier Bill and Kauri Park at the last obstacle. He soon ran past the last named pair, but could not withstand Gaze’s strong challenge. However, the Quin Abbey gelding may do a lot better on Saturday. , Kauri Park ran a good race into third place, and may soon get on the winning list. Whyte Memorial Handicap The Whyte Memorial Handicap was productive of an exciting contest, which , v ended in Black Mint defeating last year’s winner, Nukumai. Ploromea was the early leader, and she showed the way into the straight to Avro, Bisox, Day Guard, Beaumont and Kilperon, with Black Mint heading the remainder. Horomea was still at the head of affairs half way down the running, but inside the distance Nukumai and Day Guard commenced their runs, and Black Mint emerged fro mthe ruck. Nukumai headed Day Guard 100yds from the post, but then Black Mint issued his final challenge. Finishing with a splendid run Black Mint swept past Nukumai full of running and went on to win by half a length. Day Guard ran a good race into third place, as did Bisox, who, after being in the thick of the fight all . the way, was close up fourth. Ot' the remainder Beaumqnt and Avro did best. Queen Arch missed the jump out, and after beginning slowly Gold Mint was never in the picture. Te Aro Handicap Freeze Out, ridden by the popular horseman, S. Henderson, scored a surprise victory in the Te Aro Handicap, and returned his supporters a big dividend. Carinthia led along the back, but the field bunched before the straight was reached, and at that stage several runners had a chance. Half way down the running Freeze Out hit the front, and in an exciting finish lasted long enough to beat Pangolin by a neck. Four lengths away came Carinthia, followed by Rory Mor, Teri, King Mart, Marjoram and Billion. Following are the results: Vittoria Hack Hurdles, of £270; 12 miles.—4 San Pedro, 10.7 (W. J.
