At the Big Fair
AUCKLAND’S WINTER SHOW Crowds View Impressive Displays tlie first day’s operations satisfactorily concluded last evening, this morning saw the eighth annual Auckland Winter Exhibition in full working order and ready to cope with the big crowds of visitors from town and country expected to-day and during the remainder of the week. For the opening day there was a satisfactory attendance last evening, and general approval was expressed at the excellent results achieved by individual exhibitors.
This morning exhibitors were early' on the scene and in very quick time the huge fair had been put in order in preparation for the day’s activities. Additional sideshows, which were late in arriving, have been erected in Chocolate Alley, and served this morning and also in the afternoon to add to the air of bustling activity that pervades the exhibition. Visitors to the city will find no better way of putting in the morning or the afternoon than devoting an
'at 7.45 p.m., and the Onehunga Citizens’ Band will also play outside. TAURANGA EXCURSION The first excursion train from Tauranga to Auckland will run in connection with the exhibition to-day. The train will leave Taneatua at 9 a.m., and after stopping to pick up passengers en route will arrive at Auckland at 7.19 p.m. Excursion tickets will be available for return on ordinary trains until July 23j| The takings at the exhibition yesterday totalled £ 153, a decline of £l9 on the figure for the opening day last year, but this is not regarded as a guide for the financial results for the remaining days. GRADING CONTEST One of the principal features of tomorrow’s session will he the grading competitions, to be carried out by the officers of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture. About forty competitors are expected to take part, and the results will be announced at a conference to be held in the afternoon. A number of subjects vital to the manufacture of butter and cheese have been set down for discussion at the conference, and the director of the dairy division, Mr. W. M. Singleton, and Professor Peren and Professor Riddett, will give addresses. The factory managers will visit local factories on Friday morning, and will motor to places of interest during the afternoon. A smoke concert will be held in the evening, when the presentation of the Weddel Cup and Hardly Shield will be made.

There was also a good attendance early this afternoon, and it is confidently expected that the accommodation will be fully taxed this evening.
