KAIKOHE NEWS During the storm earlier in the week, Air. J. Rankin had an unpleasant experience. Ilis car skidded and went over an embankment on the Kai-kohe-Ohaeawai Road. The hood and windscreen were destroyed, and the engine caught fire, destroying the coils and distributor. before being extinguished. There was a very heavy fall of rain during the week-end at Kaikohe. From 9 a.m. on Friday to 9 a.m. on Monday, Air. Rogers, of the Native School, says that his gauge registered 7.25 inches of rain. As a result of the heavy downpour, the service from Rawene was blocked at Taheke, causing a dozen passengers to miss the connecting south-bound express. HAMILTON AFFAIRS Twelve cases of infectious diseases were notified at the Hamilton borough office last month. Of these, six were for pneumonia. * * • Eighteen permits for buildings, of a total value of £3,435, were issued in Hamilton during June. Building fees amounted to £lB ss. * * * The William Robert Friar Alemorial Prize has been awarded to SergeantMajor C. E. Hubbard, of the Hamilton High School, as the most efficient senior cadet for 1927-28 in the Northern Command. The prize, which is the book, “Earl Roberts, Forty-one Years in India,” was donated by Sur-geon-Captain R. E. Hansen, of Tredwell, Cornwall. Two similar prizes are given each year to the most efficient cadets in the Central and Southern Commands.

This year’s winner. Sergeant-Alajor Hubbard, is 16 years of age. He has been sergeant-major for 18 months. He is the son of Air. F. AY. AY. Hubbard, of Claudelands. He was recommended by the school principal, Air. E. Wilson, and Ala jor H. C. Glendining, area officer, Hamilton.

The AYaikato County Council met this week, Air. AV. Newell presiding. The engineer, Air. A. A. AVoodward, reported that the road between Hamilton and Rotorua required constant attention to keep it in good order. The Ohinewai-Taliuna road would be kept open throughout the winter this year for the first time for several years, owing to the repairs that had been effected.

It was decided to purchase a twohorse grader for use in the AVhangamarino Riding, at a cost of £65. The engineer was authorised to take steps to purchase a motor-tractor at a cost of £BO2.

The preliminary steps to form a road between the Eureka Hall and Alotumaobo, with a view to shortening the main highway between Hamilton and Morrinsville, were taken by the council. which authorised the clerk to offer £3O for one acre of land (more or less) for this purpose.

The Central Power Board met yesterday, Air. T. Hinton presiding. The. engineer. Air. J. R. Ellis, reported that during a recent storm seven service poles had been broken at To Hoe. It was found that the hearts of the poles, which were locally grown,, had not been sound. A suggestion made by Air. G. H. Boyd, that the board should grow its own trees for poles, received no support on the grounds that experience had shown that these poles were of doubtful value.

The engineer said arrangements had been made to supply the Roose Shipping coal mine at Taupiri with electricity, and plans for reticulating the Rotowaro township were being considered. The total connections to date were: Lighting, 2,818; heating, 1,020; milking motors, 757; separator motors, 12; non-milking motors, 155; water pumps, 233; water heaters, 700; electric ranges, 145.

PUKEKOHE INTERESTS AVith a view to introducing the Nelson system of Bible reading in schok, parents of children attending the Pukekohe primary school have been asked to vote on the subject. Provided the referendum is in favour of such classes being inaugurated, ministers of the Anglican, Alethodist, and Presbyterian Churches, together with the Salvation Army officer, have agreed to conduct daily lessons of half an hour, in weekly rotation. TE AWAMUTU TOPICS MOTORISTS’ CAMPING GROUND A report that the grounds at the old mission station in Arawata Street were being prepared for the purpose of a motorist’s camping site, was made by the town clerk, Air. D. Bockett, at the meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council. The sewerage system was being extended and other improvements carried out. The provision of direction posts was also receiving the attention of the council. No action was taken regarding the request of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce for support in urging the introduction of opossums into the northern portion of the King Country. The balance sheet for the year showed a credit of £29 Is Id Liabilities were shown as nil and assets £126 2s Id. The election of officers resulted:— President, Air. C. G. Downes; ricepresident.
