TRAGEDY FOLLOWS WEDDING
Bride s Father Killed CAR SKIDS AND SOMERSAULTS Press Association. PAHIATUA, To-day. TRAVELLING to Woodville after his daughter’s wedding, Mr. Donald Urquhart Gunn was killed in a motor accident. His wife and another passenger in the car were injured.
Deceased, who was about 65 years of age, was employed by the Tui Brewery Company at Mangatainoka, had attended the wedding of his daughter, Jessie, to Mr. Jack Ellmers, of Kohimui. After the reception, held at the Mangatainoka Hall, the bridal party motored to Woodville to entrain before the couple left on their honeymoon. Deceased followed in another car driven by his son-in-law, Mr. George Henry Withers, a surfaceman residing at Featherston. In the car were also Mrs. Withers and a child, Mrs. Ross and -Miss Ross, of Masterton, and Mrs. Rundle, of Nireaha. Deceased was in the back seat. As the car was going down a slope between Mangatainoka and Ngawapurua, the rear right-hand rim and
tyre came off, causing the wheels to skid in the loose metal and collapse. The car turned a complete somersault. All were thrown out with the exception of Mrs. Ross. Mr. Gunn succumbed to his injuries in the Public Hospital shortly after his admission. Mrs. Withers and Mrs. Ross were also taken to the hospital suffering from various injuries, and the remainder were badly bruised. Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Withers later regained - consciousness but are still suffering from shock. Mrs. Rundle, who is now at her daughter’s place at Mangatainoka, is also suffering greatly from shock.. . Deceased was formerly a resident of Alfred ton, but had lived for several years in Main Road, Maungatainoka.
