CIVIC WRANGLE
ADDRESS TO AVONDALE RATEPAYERS Restricted time cut short Mr. H. P. Taylor’s criticism at a meeting of the Avondale Ratepayers’ Association last evening, of Mr. T. Bloodworth’s reply to his statements on civic questions. Referring to Mr. Bloodworth’s answer that he had no desire to see the statements which Mr. Taylor offered to show him, the speaker read a statement on the material which was used in the Nihotopu dam construction. Mr. W. Pendlebury, association president, reported satisfactory progress of the organisation, and Messrs. W. R. Murray and J. R. Lundon spoke on civic affairs. A protest was made against the Auckland City Council’s action in refusing councillors permission to inspect legal documents relating to the Civic Square, and the cit5 r ratepayers will be advised by the meeting to refuse to sanction any further loans during the regime of the present council. The clause in the Water Bill before the House of Representatives giving the City Council power to raise money without the sanction of the ratepayers, was opposed. A copy of a resolution to that effect will be sent to the Prime Minister and to Auckland members of Parliament. A resolution was passed asking that the town clerk give information regarding the engineer’s estimate of the cost of the completed Huia dam, the loan or loans already carried for construction, and the actual cost up to May 31 last.
