Dale Austen Travels with a Companion
Anxious Moments in a “Railway Conspiracy”
MISS N.Z. OUTWITS PORTERS ,“1VT ISS NEW ZEALAND” (Dale Austen) left Auckland for her home town, Dunedin, last evening. She did not travel alone, and it is said that she has tender feeling for the companian who went with her. Many of Miss Austen’s friends met at the Railway Station to bid her farewell, but the platform ticket restriction precluded most of them from meeting her at the train side. However, the “Wanglers” got busy, and finally permission was given to all who wished to say good-bye to her to have admission to the platform. They all wondered why she looked worried, why she had such a furtive look as she passed through the barriers on to the platform. One hand clasped her coat collar firmly, and she was obviously ill-at-ease. As she stood outside her carriage there was still a suggestion of restlessness in her bearing. The coat collar was held more firmly—she was obviously keeping a secret from the world. It was not until the train moved out that the secret was revealed. There was an upheaval inside her coat, and a furry little head thrust itself into the open air. Two small eyes flamed behind a delicate moist nose. As the train glided away, Dale’s pomeranian puppy barked derisively at the railway porters he and his mistress had conspired so effectively to elude.
