ENAMELLING A BEDSTEAD
D.G. writes: I have a very ugly bedstead, in my room, the ordinary black iron variety tcith a brass rail on top. Can you tell me how to make it look presentablef I would like it to go with a blue carpet, and a brass bed would, in my opinion, be better suited to it. Could I lacquer in brasst
It is quite impossible to lacquer your iron bed in brass. The only thing approaching such a finish would be either gold paint or a gold “cellulose” paint, and neither of these would look really nice. You could, however, enamel the ironwork to match the carpet, and this should be done by first thoroughly cleaning the ironwork with soda and water to remove all grease. Then rub over with sandpaper to get a surface on which the paint or enamel will hold. Finally, apply several coats of the colour you choose, and allow ample time between each coat in order that each may be absolutely dry before the next is applied.
