Auckland to Have N.Z. Tennis Tourney
ADOPTION OF BALL AUCKLAND L.T.A. MEETS • The New Zealand tennis championship for 1928 will be played in Auckland, the Auckland L.T.A. having granted the use of its courts to the governing body. This was probably the most important business dealt with at the annual meeting of the Auckland Association last evening. Mr. E. Hickson presided. The N.Z.L.T.A. asked permission to use the courts and it was granted unconditionally. "It’s a good chance to make money,” said the president. Mr. IT. G. Thomson suggested that the N.Z.L.T.A. might include some Auckland men on the Management Committee of the tournament. Last year the Canterbury Association had been left out of affairs and it had resented it. It was decided to express the hope that the governing body would utilise Auckland men as much as possible. Moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr. Hickson said that t.he actual excess of expenditure over income for the year was £4O 11s lid. He said that the New Zealand championships would mean increased revenue this year, but the association would have to go into the question of raising affiliation fees. “We’ve got a nest-egg to look after.” he said, “and we should not draw on it. Nobody would growl if the fees were put up 6d." Mr. E. W. Griffiths said the association would be living in a "fool’s paradise” if it contented itself with living on the interest of the money invested. Mr. Thomson objected to the suggested increase in subscriptions. Continuing, the president said that 13 new clubs with a total membership of 511 had joined the association last year. After discussing a motion moved by Mr. Hickson, the meeting decided that life members without voting power might be selected by vote at the annual meeting. It was decided that one pennant for each grade of inter-club competition should be presented, the winning club to hold a pennant for a season. SELECTION OF BALL The Ball-testing Committee reported that after it had "carried out” tests as to be wearing and playing qualities and considered a very full report on the diameter, bounce and weight tests forwarded by Professor Burbidge, of the Auckland University College, it had* found it impossible to single out any one make, but was unanimous in recommending that the final selection should be made from the three makes, Davis, Ayres and Spalding, England. The president said that it had been impossible to find out the wearing qualities of the ball without certain machines. . Mr. A. Goldie: The wearing is the most important of the lot. After discussing the subject at length, the meeting instructed the secretary to find out the prices of the three makes and to report to the next meeting. .Officers were elected as follows: Patron, his Excellency the Govern or-General; president, Mr. E. Hickson; vice-presidentl Messrs. A. Goldie, F. J. Ohlson, H. G. Thomson, G. L. Taylor, C. C. Chalmers and D. G. Macfarlane; lion, auditor, Mr. B. L. Bagnall; grounds superintendent, Mr. E. W.
