SHAKESPEAREAN EVENING PENWOMEN’S LEAGUE An interesting address on Shakespeare and his works was given last evening by Mr. J. M. Clark at an open evening of the dramatic section of the League of Penwomen. It was the first meeting of the current year, and there was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mrs. Nello Porter, who was unanimously re-elected convenor of the section for another year. Mrs. Ethel Schmitt, who has acted as secretary during the past year, was also returned unopposed.
Mr. Clark read an essay of R. E. Ingersoll’s on the life and works of Shakespeare. It was remarkable for the knowledge and insight into the great poet-dramatist’s work and the influences which affected him, and displayed Ingersoll’s mastery of language and his powers as an essayist of the highest order. Besides dealing with Shakespeare’s life in detail, the paper contained many references and examples from his works, extracts of drama and romance, phantasy and love, pathos and humour, all of which were ably expounded by Mr. Clark. At the close of the reading Mrs. Porter expressed the League’s thanks to Mr. Clark, and the evening concluded with supper.
